Government Will Not Remove ICE President

Although the Juzgado Penal de Hacienda has decided to try the president of ICE, Pedro Pablo Quirós, on charges of embezzlement and misappropriation, he will not be fired.

The ministro de la presidencia, Rodrigo Arias, said on Wednesday that the decision is not sufficient to remove Quirós who has only weeks to go in his mandate before being replaced by Eduaro Doryan, who was appointed by president-elect, Laura Chinchilla, to head the state institution.

Minister Arias explained that, in Costa Rica, every person is presumed innocent until proven otherwise and that he would have to wait until the end of the trial.

The charges against Quirós stem from the personal use of a helicopter paid for by the institution following the January 2009 earthquake in Cinchona.

The charges were filed by Fiscalía Adjunta de Delitos Económicos, Corrupción y Tributarios last September against Quirós, his wife and an executive of ICE.

On Tuesday the Juzgado Penal de Hacienda announced the decision to take the case to trial.
