Alajuela Could Have Its Name Changed From City of Mangos To City Of Stones

The city of Alajuela, west of San José and home to San José international airport, is known as the "la ciudad de los mangos" (the city of Mangos). But that could soon come to an end.

Many fear that the city may soon be called the "ciudad de las piedras" (city of stones) for the radical decision by the city's mayor to place large stones along the main streets of the city to deter illegal parking and blocking pedestrian traffic.

Where the stones sit now used to be planters. However, that did not stop the problem.

Adding to the possible name change for the city is that the the decision of the placing of the stones has boiled over into a full scale controversy.

Everyone in the town is talking about the stones. And that could be enough for short memories to forget the mango and replace it with the stone.
