Marduk Joins Growing List of
Bands Making A Stop in Costa Rica
Swedish metal band Marduk has been added to
the list of international bands making
appearances in Costa Rica. The band was
formed in 1990 and released their first
record in 1991, and whose name is derived
from the Babylonian god Marduk, patron deity
of Babylon, will be heading to Costa Rica
and Central America in July.
"It is with the greatest pleasure we present
Marduks return to Central America. The band
are delighted to return to the lands of
Camazotz! This Cental American Death
March will pass through 4 countries, namely
Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and
Honduras. The march begins at the end of
July", the band said in a press release.
The band will be in Costa Rica on July 29,
San Salvador on July 30, San Pedreo Sula
(Honduras) on July 31 and Guatemala City on
August 1.
In Maya mythology, Camazotz was a bat god.
Camazotz means "death bat" in the K'iche'
language. In Mesoamerica the bat was
associated with night, death, and sacrifice.
Around 100 B.C., a peculiar religious cult
grew up among the Zapotec Indians of Oaxaca,
Mexico. The cult venerated an
anthropomorphic monster with the head of a
bat, an animal associated with night, death,
and sacrifice. This monster soon found its
way into the pantheon of the Quiché, a tribe
of Maya who made their home in the jungles
of what is now Guatemala. The Quiché
identified the bat-deity with their god
Zotzilaha Chamalcan, the god of fire.
Popol Vuh, a Mayan sacred book, identifies
Zotzilaha as not a god, but a cavern, "The
House of Bats". Zotzilaha was home to a type
of bat called camazotz; one of these
monsters decapitated the hero Hunahpú.
Camazotz has been translated as "death bat"
and "snatch bat".
