Problems At Airport Causes Chinchilla To Stand Up Ortega

Nicaragua's president Daniel Ortega was stood up by Costa Rica's president-elect Laura Chinchilla when a problem at the Aeropuerto Internacional de El Salvador shut down the airport, grounding Chinchilla's travel plans.

The meeting between Chinchilla and Ortega was to have taken place at 4:30pm on Tuesday.

The flight carrying Chinchilla and her group from Guatemala to Managua, with a stop in El Salvador, was returned to the airport fifteen minutes after taking off after an incident in El Salvador involving a cargo plane shut down the airport.

The Nicaragua stop in Chinchilla's Central American tour was the last on the agenda, given the tense relations between the two neighbouring countries and differences of opinion between Ortega and Oscar Arias.

Chinchilla said she spoke personally with Nicaragua's first lady, Rosario Murillo, explaining the situation.

President-elect Chinchilla is expected to travel to Managua next week as she embarks on a possible visit to Panama and Colombia.
