Bolivian Lawmakers on Green

LA PAZ - Bolivian deputies have begun
analyzing bills on forestry, environment,
and hydraulic resources proposed by the
Lower Chamber's Amazonian Commission.
According to Galo Silvestre, head of the
working group, the regulations aim at
protecting the environment, the vast
Amazonian region, forests, fauna, hydraulic
resources, and the entire biodiversity.
Bolivia is one of the world's referents and
lungs, and that is the reason of the
initiative to preserve its main natural
riches, he said.
The legislator indicated the approval of
those regulations will be another
contribution to protect the Earth, an issue
to be discussed during the first World
People's Conference on Climate Change, April
20-22 in Cochabamba.
Silvestre stressed that affairs linked to
forest resources are for the first time
included in the new Constitution of the
State, taken into effect in February 2009.
He also said it is crucial to reform the
current environment law, thus meeting
demands by social organizations and
indigenous communities.
Deliberations of those norms will be held in
parallel to a workshop in the country's nine
departments, to socialize the proposals to
be taken to the climate summit.
