Honduras Army Backs up the
Police
TEGUCIGALPA - Honduran President Porfirio
Lobo decided to mobilize army troops to back
up security tasks by the police.
The measure was adopted Tuesday when Lobo
met with the ministerial cabinet, local
press reported.
However, 1,000 soldiers were assigned Friday
to help the police control a region where
landowners and farmers are at odds.
Defense Minister Marlon Pascua informed the
police will be assigned as many soldiers and
means as necessary to efficiently carry out
security operations.
The official said those measures aim at
ensuring national peace, protect life, and
private property.
The Armed Forces have maintained a large
deployment since the military overthrew and
expatriated constitutional President Manuel
Zelaya on June 28.
Human rights organizations denounced the
military and police invasion since Monday of
farmer communities in Bajo Aguan, scene of
the agrarian conflict.
