Closure Of Many
Retail Stores
Shouting "if we
can't sell, they
can't either", a
group of "vendedores
ambulantes"
(street vendors)
ensured many of
the retail
stores along the
boulevards (Avenida
Central) and
Avenidas 4 to 8,
shut down their
stores in fear
of being looted.
The street
vendors caused
the downtown
core to come to
a retail halt
for several
hours as all
police could do
is stand by and
follow the
hooligans around
ensuring that
the action would
scale to full
out violence.
However,
although the
police did not
act, there were
several
confrontations
between vendors
and the
municipal
police.
This is a
problem that
seems to have no
solution.
For years the
street vendors
have been
involved in a
cat and mouse
game with
municipal police
where they hide
their goods as
police approach,
police making
their presence
known,
confiscating
goods from the
street vendors
from time to
time.
