Police Detonate Fake Bomb In
Venezuelan Consulate In Rio
RIO DE JANEIRO - Police on Wednesday
detonated a package sent to the Venezuelan
consulate in Rio de Janeiro, which was
suspected to be a bomb but was found
containing no explosives.
According to local daily O Globo, the "bomb"
turned out to be two batteries wrapped up
together with tape, and was sent by mail to
the consulate inside a box, accompanied by a
letter addressed to Venezuelan President
Hugo Chavez and a note saying that the
package would explode.
The note scared the consulate workers, who
called police.
Traffic around the building where the
Venezuelan Consulate is located was blocked
off as police set off the fake bomb. The
building, which also houses the consulates
of Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay, and the
Netherlands, had to be evacuated.
Police used a robot to take the "bomb" from
the building, and detonated it in the middle
of an avenue.
It was not clear yet who sent the package to
the consulate, police said.
