Emerging Nations in Brazil
for New World Order
BRASILIA - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and
South Africa advocated a fairer, more
democratic world order, and called to reform
the United Nations and international
financial organizations.
The Itamaraty Palace, headquarters of the
Brazilian Foreign Ministry, Thursday
welcomed the fourth summit of the Dialogue
Forum among India, Brazil, and South Africa
(IBAS) and the second of BRIC (Brazil,
Russia, India, and China), undoubtedly the
world's leading emerging powers at present.
BRIC said in a joint release it is
imperative to reform the UN to make it more
effective, representative, and objective.
The nearly two-hour meeting was attended by
Presidents Hu Hintao, who returned last
night to China after it was hit by a strong
quake, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brazil,
and Dmitri Medvedev, Russia, as well as
Indian Prime Minister Monmohan Singh.
The participants signed a cooperation
agreement among the development banks of the
four countries to jointly fund
infrastructure works of the bloc's members.
When closing the summit, President Lula told
press the joint release reflects the many
common interests linking the four nations in
fields such as politics, finance, trade,
environment, oil, agriculture, and security.
He also stressed the key role of those
emerging powers in the construction of a new
world order, fairer, safer, and more
representative.
