Colombia Hopeful Stance
Worrying: Cordoba
BOGOTA - The stance and statements by
presidential candidate of the ruling party,
Juan Manuel Santos, are worrying, Senator
Piedad Cordoba told Prensa Latina.
After winding up an intense tour of Europe,
the also promoter of the Colombians for
Peace Movement stressed that Santos' stance
could mark the trend to regionalize the
armed conflict in her country.
Interviewed by Prensa Latina in Paris,
Cordoba admitted that, for instance,
affectations on bilateral trade with
Venezuela would have a very negative effect
on the already high unemployment rate in
Colombia.
"I think there is an important context with
the existence of UNASUR, which is a relevant
space to be used in the fight against drug
trafficking. Our country must favor
diplomacy over confrontation," she
commented.
Trying to establish links with Ecuador and
Venezuela by force is very dangerous for
regional peace and stability, apart from the
delicate situation posed by the US military
bases, she noted.
