"Change Of
Attitude" Key To
ICE Facing
Competition
Eduardo Doryan
will be the new
head of the
Instituto
Costarricense de
Electricidad
(ICE) on May 8.
And after a
stint at the
minsiterio de
Educación and
the presidency
of the Caja
Costarricense de
Seguro Social (CCSS),
Doryan says he
is ready for the
challenge ahead.
One of the main
things that has
to happen at
ICE, says Doryan,
is a change in
attitude for it
to compete.
Doryan is
adamant that if
the institution
is competitive
it will be
assured the
financial base
that is key to
move ahead with
its projects.
But, how will he
do it and is ICE
ready for the
competition that
is coming?
Doryan says he
believes that
ICE has made
important
changes in the
last three years
and it is better
prepared than in
the past. The
executive cites
the problems
faced by the
Banco Nacional
in the mid 90's
as Costa Rica's
financial market
opened to
competition.
Doryan stresses
that mental
attitude is key
to a successful
confrontation
with
competition.
The biggest
challenge Doryan
will face is
convincing union
leaders of the
change which is
not only good
for the company,
the workers, but
also the
country.
Doryan says the
experiences of
the Banco
Nacional facing
competition will
help ICE with
the challenge
ahead as at
least three
other companies
will be soon be
given the right
to offer
telecommunications
services -
mainly cellular
services -
competing with
ICE.
