Brazilian Indigenous
Celebrate Indian Day
BRASILIA - More than 15,000 Brazilian
indigenous are celebrating on Monday the
Brazilian Indian Day in the state of Roraima.
The celebration began on Wednesday and also
commemorates the first anniversary of the
Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF)'s ruling that
give the Raposa - Serra do Sol reservoir to
the indigenous inhabitants of that area and
expelled those non-Indian from the
territory.
President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva is
expected to attend the celebration in the
reservoir that will assemble about 18,000
members of the ethnic groups of the area.
The president will meet the indigenous
leaders who will demand that funds set to
indigenous come to the communities' reality
of life.
"We have waited for a decent land for a long
time, a land that truly belongs to us to
work on it with our parents and children.
Invader caused us a lot of suffering, that
is why the STF ruling is very important to
us," an indigenous leader said.
