Open Pit Mining
President-elect,
Laura
Chinchilla, said
on Monday that
her government
will be
intervening the
operations of
Correos Costa
Rica (Post
Office), the
Instituto
Nacional de
Vivienda y
Urbanismo (INVU)
and the Consejo
Nacional de la
Producción (CNP)
due their poor
economic
situation as
result of poor
management.
Chinchilla made
the comments
during the
announcement of
her list of
heads of state
institutions,
save the three
aforementioned,
whose naming
will be delayed
for some time.
The
president-elect
made public the
following
appointments:
- Heading up the
Instituto
Nacional de la
Mujer (INAMU) -
Women's
Institute - will
Rocio Cerdas
- The Instituto
de Desarrollo
Agrario
(Agrarian
Development
Institute) will
be run by
Rolando González
- Acueductos y
Alcantarillados
(AyA) - water
and sewers -
Oscar Nuñez
- Instituto
Nacional de
Aprendizaje
(INA) - learning
institute -
Olman Segura
- Sistema
Nacional de
Radio y
televisión de
Costa Rica (SINART),
Rodrigo Arias
- Caja
Costarricense
del Seguro
Social (CCSS),
Dr. Ileana
Balmaceda
- Staying on at
the Instituto
Nacional de
Seguros (INS)
will be
Guillermo
Constenla
Chinchilla also
said that
following May 8,
the day she
takes office,
there is the
possibility that
a moratorium on
open pit mining
will be
announced.
This is
reference to
last week's
decision by the
Constitutional
Court paving the
way for the
operation of the
open pit mine
known as
Crucitas, near
San Carlos, and
the actions of
environmentalists
that have
currently
blocked the go
ahead with an
appeal to the
courts.
