President-Elect
Chinchilla Off
To Nicaragua
Today
Costa Rica's
president-elect,
Laura
Chinchilla, will
travel to
Managua today to
meet with her
Nicaraguan
counterpart,
Daniel Ortega.
The
president-elect
could not make
her meeting with
Ortega last week
when her travel
plans were
changed due to a
problem at the
airport in El
Salvador,
forcing back her
plane to
Guatemala,
during a visit
of Central
America.
The Ortega
meeting was
rescheduled for
today.
The two are
expected to
discuss the
plans to jointly
develop tourism
along the Costa
Rica - Nicaragua
border,
hopefully to
curb the
migration of
Nicaraguans in
search of work,
by giving
Nicaraguans more
job
opportunities in
the area.
A subject that
may be also
discussed is the
San Juan river
situation.
"It will be
impossible not
to talk about
it", said
Chinchilla.
Although the
International
Court supported
Costa Rica's
claim for free
navigation of
the river that
separates the
two countries
and that clearly
belongs to
Nicaragua,
relations on the
issue have been
strained.
Another topic of
discussion will
be Ortega's
participation in
the Chinchilla
coronation on
May 8. Nicaragua
is the only
Central American
country that yet
to reply to
Costa Rica's
invitation.
