Brazil Asks Indonesia Not To
Execute Two Brazilian Nationals
BRASILIA - Brazil's Justice Ministry said
Monday that it would send a plea for mercy
to Indonesia to avoid the execution of two
Brazilian drug traffickers.
Brazil decided to file a plea following a
meeting on Saturday between Brazilian
Justice Minister Luiz Paulo Barreto and his
Indonesian counterpart, Patrialis Akbar.
Barreto said Brazil recognizes the
sovereignty of Indonesia and does not intend
to question its justice system.
"What we ask is that they are not executed,"
he said.
"It would be very offensive to our country,
because Brazil does not have the death
penalty and no Brazilians have ever been
executed outside the country," he said.
One of the Brazilians that have been
condemned to death is a 48-year-old flight
instructor, Marcho Archer Cardoso Moreira.
He was imprisoned in 2003 for trying to
enter Indonesia with 13.4 kg of cocaine
hidden in his hang-glider.
The other is a 37-year-old surfer, Rodrigo
Gularte. He was sentenced to death in 2004
after he was found in possession of six kg
of the same drug.
The ministry did not mention the date when
the plea would be filed.
