Castro Hails Friendship With
Venezuelan President Chavez
HAVANA - Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro
hailed his friendship with Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez and voiced his
admiration to Chavez, local media reported
Monday.
In his column, Castro recalled that he met
Chavez in 1994 and since then he had
witnessed his revolutionary development for
nearly 16 years.
Castro, 83, had talked with Chavez for three
hours when Chavez visited Cuba on April 15.
Describing Chavez as a man of "exceptional
talent" and "true master in the development
and dissemination of revolutionary ideas,"
Castro said that "only few times in a life,
it is possible to meet a person who is able
to rule a real and profound revolution for
over 10 years."
Castro said the United States was worried
about Chavez because of his ability to
influence people.
He emphasized that the U.S. government and
its "mercenary acts" underestimated the
Venezuelan president and his people.
"But I have no doubt that they (U.S.) will
receive an unforgettable lesson if they
attack Chavez," the leader said, who also
sent congratulations "to the Venezuelans on
the 200th anniversary of the beginning of
the struggle for their independence."
