Panama: Ecologists Worried on
Deforestation
PANAMA - Representatives of Panamanian
environmental organizations expressed
concern on Thursday at the growing
deforestation, which threatens to reduce
forest areas in the country with a
subsequent adverse impact on climate.
Open Debate program gathered indiscriminate
cutting-related worries in the province of
Darien the one with more trees coverage in
the country.
Images displayed by the National Association
for the Conservation of Nature (ANCON)
revealed the extraction of protected species
in the area and the burning of forests to
obtain areas for livestock.
Panama's National Authority for the
Environment's figures (ANAM) show in 1970
Panama's forest coverage reached 70 percent
of the country with 5,2 million hectares
(12,9 million acres).
That level fell in 2009 to 43 percent,
equivalent to 7,9 million acres.
Historical reports of the Hydrometeorology
management of Electricity Transmission
Company SA (ETECSA) declare in 1970 the
temperature was around 27 degrees Celsius
while nowadays it is well above 30 degrees.
