PLN To Push For
An End To Riteve
Monopoly
The vehicular
inspection
company, Riteve,
may have its
days of monopoly
numbered if the
new legislators
of the Partido
Liberación
Nacional (PLN)
have their way.
The move to
break the Riteve
monopoly by the
governing party
may have the
support of the
Movimiento
Liberation (ML)
party, as nine
ML legislators
coming in on May
1, have agreed
to give the PLN
their support
for the plan.
The plan has the
support of the
next ministerio
de la
Presidencia,
Marco Vargas and
it will be up to
president-elect,
Laura
Chinchilla, to
inform Riteve
that its
contract will
not be
automatically
renewed and to
announce a
bidding for the
vehicular
inspection
service.
This could
quickly become a
reality when,
Otto Guevara,
leader of the ML
and Chinchilla,
meet next week.
However, the
Riteve question
could be put off
for more
important
issues, like
citizen's
security, as the
new legislators
are expected to
be asked for a
hard line
attitude towards
combatting
increased crime
in the country.
As well there
are number of
other pressing
"political"
issues that
could further
delay the Riteve
proposal.
In any event,
the new group of
legislators will
have their hands
full come May 1
as they inherit
some pending
legislation from
the current
legislative
assembly, like
the reforms to
the Ley de
Tránsito.
