Chavez calls on Environmental
Battle to Save the Planet
CARACAS - Venezuelan President Hugo
Chavez has called for an international
battle to save the planet from environmental
degradation caused by the capitalist system.
In his Sunday column "Chavez's Lines", he
refers to the First World Conference of the
Peoples on Climate Change and the Rights to
Mother Earth recently held in Cochabamba,
Bolivia, which was attended by
representatives from 142 countries.
It is evident that the only responsible for
the criminal degradation of the environment
and the sources of life are the governments
of the most powerful countries that are
reluctant to change a destructive global
model of production and consumption which in
short terms will end up with everything and
everyone, starting with themselves, Chavez
warns.
In his opinion, the result of the Cochabamba
Conference should be taken to the Cancun
Summit on Climate Change scheduled for late
2010.
"It is our duty to take to Cancun Summit and
all international forum the wise results of
this meeting, not only to continue exposing
the guilty ones but to demand urgent changes
to safeguard human life in the planet".
The president also comments on the meeting
in December 2009 in Copenhagen, where a
group of countries led by the United States
tried to impose an agreement without the
solutions required to address the crisis.
