May 1 Is Labour
Day in Costa
Rica, Also A Day
Of Accounting
Tomorrow,
Saturday, is May
1 just in case
you hadn't
noticed. And
what is so
special about
May 1?
Well, for one
thing, it is a
day of double
pay for workers
who are required
to work.
According to the
article 148 of
the Código de
Trabajo (Labour
Code), May 1 is
"Labour Day" in
Costa Rica and a
holiday for work
and for those
who are required
to work, they
must be paid
double their day
salary.
However, for
Costa Rica's
president, Oscar
Arias, it will
be a day of work
and his last
public speech of
his term.
Mayi Antillón,
ministra de
Información,
explained that
her office has
been working the
past month
collecting
information from
all the public
institutions to
be included in
the president's
last report to
the country.
The ten page
speech is
expected to take
about an hour
and cover many
different areas,
as Arias reports
on the state of
the nation, a
tradition for
each May 1 by
the sitting
president.
This speech is
expected to
provide an
excerpt of the
accomplishments
of the
government
during the last
four years, an
accounting sort
of speak.
Antillón assures
that Arias has
been personally
involved in the
drafting of the
speech,
something that
he is accustomed
to, not relying
on speech
writers for his
message to the
public.
Exactly one week
later, Arias
will be handing
over the
presidential
sash to his
protege, Laura
Chinchilla, the
first woman
president of
Costa Rica, in a
public ceremony
in La Sabana
park.
