Ruta 32 (San
José - Guapiles)
Continues Closed
Although it had
been hoped that
the Ruta 32 (San
José - Guapiles)
would have been
re-opened
Thursday
afternoon, that
is not the case,
as the road
continues closed
as work crews
continue their
fight to remove
mud and debris
from landslides
caused by heavy
rain this week.
Germán Marín,
director of the
Policía de
Tránsito, said
that there is
the possibility
that the road
will continue
closed
throughout the
weekend.
The only traffic
getting through
in the area of
the Zurquí
tunnel are
emergency
vehicles, as the
Consejo Nacional
de Vialidad (Conavi)
workers were
able to clear
enough of the
road surface to
permit police,
ambulances and
fire trucks to
pass through the
area.
The continuing
rain through the
area are making
the work efforts
difficult.
In addition to
clearing the
debris from the
road, engineers
and geologists
have to assess
the safety of
the area.
According to
figures by the
Dirección
General de
Ingeniería de
Tránsito, some
9.000 to 10.000
vehicles a day
pass through the
area.
Travelling to
and from San
José to Guapiles
and Limón, the
only route open
is Ruta 10, that
takes hours in
light traffic
and good
weather.
Although the
route is in good
condition, it is
a narrow route
that winds
through the
mountains.
