Honduras:
Hemorrhagic
Dengue
Fever
Kills 57
TEGUCIGALPA
- The
death
toll
from
hemorrhagic
dengue
fever in
Honduras
rose to
57 after
the the
death of
an
8-month-old
child
was
confirmed
on
Sunday,
the
Ministry
of
Health
reported.
According
to the
ministry's
National
Certification
Commission
for
Dengue,
14
deaths
from the
hermorrhagic
strain
of the
virus
were
registered
in the
past
week.
Likewise,
the
ministry
said
dengue
fever
patients
now
number
more
than
40,000,
while
the
hemorrhagic
version
of the
disease
has
affected
more
than
2,000
people.
Most of
the
deaths
were in
Tegucigalpa,
a city
with
more
than one
million
people,
most of
whom
live in
poor
neighborhoods
and
overcrowded
conditions.
The
northern
zone was
the
second
most-affected
by the
epidemic,
caused
by the
proliferation
of the
Aedes
aegypti
mosquito,
which
carries
the
disease.
However,
heath
authorities
reported
a slight
tendency
towards
fewer
cases,
although
the
death
toll
from the
hemorrhagic
variety
is
rising.
This
epidemic
is
considered
to be
the most
serious
faced by
Honduras
in the
last
three
decades.
Public
and
private
institutions
are
maintaining
a
national
prevention
campaign
to stop
the
spread
of the
virus,
whose
incidence
has
worsened
with the
beginning
of the
rainy
season
in
Central
America.
