GUATEMALA
-
Guatemala
has its
first
female
Attorney
General,
Claudia
Paz,
whom
President
Alvaro
Colom
swore
in, and
who he
chose
over
five
male
candidates.
Colon
spoke
previously
to
representatives
of civil
organizations,
who
expressed
a
preference
for Paz.
As
Attorney
General
and
Minister
of
Justice,
Paz -who
caps the
rating
the
elections
commission
gave the
candidates-
said her
prime
objectives
are
fighting
impunity
and
organized
crime.
Paz, a
54-year
lawyer,
plans to
start
her
four-year
office
evaluating
her
staff
and
maintaining
co-operation
with the
International
Commission
against
Impunity
in
Guatemala
(Cicig).
This is
the
second
process

after
the

rejected
by the
Constitutional
Court.
He was
seriously
questioned
by Cicig
for
supposed
links
with
powerful
groups
involved
in drug
trafficking
and for
acting
in their
favour
in the
Ministry
of
Justice.
