Galapagos, Amazon: Finalists of New Wonders

QUITO - Galapagos Islands and the Amazon are among the 28 finalists of the contest "New 7 Wonders of Nature", Rodrigo Salas, director of Ecuador Tourism Promotion, said.

He said that 77 places classified to the second phase and now there are only 28 finalists in the different categories. The winners will be published in 2011.

The categories of the contest are: landscapes and ice formations, islands, mountains and volcanoes, rocky formations and valleys, forests, reserve and national parks, lakes, rivers and waterfalls and seascapes.

Salas said they want people relate Galapagos Islands with Ecuador and also that tourists visit places of natural and cultural attractions to be in touch with people from Ecuador's 4 Worlds.

The two Ecuadorian proposals went on the last phase with other 26 places, some of them located in bordering countries.

The Amazon is in the category "Forests, National Parks and Reserves" and Galapagos Islands in the "Islands" category.

This contest held by the Swiss organization New7Wonders began in 2008. In 2009 Ecuadorian Minister of Tourism Veronica Sion was notified that the two tourist destinations went on to the second phase.

In the first phase classified 260 of 440 world natural places. 20 places of those 260 are located in South America, among them there are the two Ecuadorian finalists.
