Venezuela To Promote
Energy Saving Via Controlled Power Rationing
CARACAS - Venezuela is to cut its
electricity supply by 20 percent in its
capital city to promote energy saving in a
nationwide drive, the presidential office
said on Monday in a statement.
The energy saving drive will not affect the
operation of small entrepreneurs, the
residential quarters and areas with "high
social sensitivity" in the city.
The statement, however, did not mention the
starting date of the announced energy saving
drive.
State-run Energie Electrica de Venezuela
power supplier said starting from Monday
there would be a daily four-hour power
supply cut in the Zulia State. The state is
one of the most important oil-producing
regions in the country.
Though the country is rich in oil and
natural gas resources, 70 percent of
Venezuela's electricity comes from four
hydropower plants.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has blamed
drought that results in low levels at
hydropower dams for the electricity crisis
his country has been experiencing since late
October 2009.
