Guatemala Sends
Military Contingent To Haiti For
Reconstruction
GUATEMALA - Guatemala is dispatching the 8th
military contingent to Haiti for post-quake
recovery.
The contingent of 113 military policemen
will fly to Haiti Wednesday to join the UN
Stabilization Mission in Haiti. They will
aid the Haitian people and express
solidarity with them, according to
Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom.
At the farewell ceremony, Colom said the
biggest responsibility of this contingent is
to assist the ongoing reconstruction in the
quake-hit Caribbean country.
Meanwhile, Guatemalan Defense Minister
Abraham Valenzuela said this contingent of
"peace soldiers" will have more
responsibilities than the Guatemalan
soldiers previously sent to Haiti.
"Post-quake recovery efforts are underway in
Haiti, and this relay of assistance carries
with it a big responsibility," Valenzuela
added.
