Nicaragua: No Quorum
to Examine Amnesty Draft
MANAGUA - Nicaraguan progressive forces
passed today the first test against
conservative opposition, when session was
suspended for lack of quorum to examine a
polemic amnesty project to free corrupt
officials.
It is all about an initiative that, if it
becomes law, it would clean all the judicial
files of about one hundred public officials
that occupied their posts from April 25,
1990 to January 9, 2007, period covering the
neoliberal governments of ex-presidents
Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, Arnoldo Aleman
Lacayo and Enrique Bolaños Geyer.
The political groups supporting the project,
headed by the Partido Liberal
Constitucionalista and the Movement Vamos
con Eduardo, could not gather today in
Parliament the necessary quorum of deputies
ready to support the amnesty.
Only two leaders of the opposition were
registered in the electronic board to
participate in the debate, despite that in
the hemicycle were present the members of
the Executive Board and a great number of
deputies.
In that situation, the President of the
National Assembly, the Sandinist Rene Nuñez,
suspended the session, but according to the
agenda approved, the issue could be again
approached tomorrow Wednesday or on
Thursday.
What took place today indicates the
opposition has still not gathered the number
of votes required to approve the bill,
commented several deputies.
While this took place in the legislative
organ, thousands of persons gathered in the
surroundings of the parliamentary building
to protest against the attempt of the
opposition to amnesty the corrupt
ex-officials.
The people has been summoned to maintain
their massive presence around the Assembly
to reject the opposition�s pretension,
recalled deputies of the ruling Frente
Sandinista de Liberacion Nacional.
