Three More Months of
"Bus Free" On the New Highway
One of the best points of driving the hew
San José - Caldera highway is the lack of
buses on the road. This is due to the fact
that the bus lines do not still have the
concession routes to use the new highway.
But, that will soon change.
The international bus lines like Tica Bus
and Transnica that offer service between
Costa Rica and Nicaragua (Central America in
the case of Tica Bus) and Tracopa which
offers service to Panama, have all applied
for the right to use the San José - Caldera.
In the case of Tica Bus and Transnica, they
now operate on route 1 through the
Cambronero, while Tracopa on route 1 through
Perez Zeledon.
In addition, other bus operators, like buses
to Jacó, Quepos and Puntarenas, for
instance, have applied to change or add
their services using the San José - Caldera.
Is it expected that buse operators to
Liberia and other points in Guanacaste, like
Tamarindo, Famingo, etc, will do the same.
Marco Vargas, the ministro de Obras Publicas
y Transporters (MOPT), confirmed that bus
operators have applied for new concessions
and/or changes to the existing concessions
and will be given concession by the Consejo
de Transportes Publico next month.
From that, the operators must then apply to
the Autoridad Reguladora de Servicios
Público (Aresep) for fare approval, which
according to Carolina Mora of the Aresep,
could take up to more months to review the
applications, hold public hearings and
approve the fares.
So, while the process of approving
concessions and fares takes place, drivers
can enjoy the San José - Caldera bus free.
