Crisis Worrying
BOGOTA - Presidential candidate of Radical
Change Party German Vargas Lleras described
as worrying the health situation in
Colombia, which is going through one of its
worst crisis in the last few years.
Vargas Lleras told Caracol Radio that if no
immediate action is taken the problem will
worsen, as in 2010 the sector will lack
resources equivalent to 0.8 of the country's
Gross Domestic Product.
He also ratified his denunciation of the
hiring of people linked to Health Providing
Businesses (EPS) to design the controversial
decrees issued by government under the
protection of the social emergency
promulgated last December.
He also considered incredible that the
Compulsory Health Plan has not been updated
since 1994 and expressed concern for
restrictions that might be imposed on health
professionals.
Several health and social organizations have
requested the government to reconsider the
said decrees intended to put an end to the
crisis in the sector as the right to health
care might be at stake.
These fears stem from the probable impact of
the measures on the quality of the service,
as some analysts consider that the poor will
end up funding the system.
But the government insists that they will
bring "enormous benefits."
