Abolishes General Disarmament Decree
TEGUCIGALPA - Honduran President Porfirio
Lobo abolished on Tuesday the disarmament
law adopted by former defacto leader Roberto
Micheletti.
The decree prohibited the bearing of weapons
and also included a general disarmament
before the general elections on Nov. 29,
2009.
Lobo said the decree was abolished because
it was illegal from the beginning. However,
he also said those found carrying weapons in
an illegal way would face a jail term of
nine to 12 years.
The abolition of the decree was effective
immediately, according to the National
Police spokesman Leonel Sauceda.
Micheletti enforced the disarmament decree
on Nov. 23, 2009, six days before the
general elections in which Lobo won with
56.56 percent of the votes. The new
president took office on Jan. 27, 2010.
