FM Hails Normalization
Of Honduras' International Ties
TEGUCIGALPA - Honduran Foreign Minister
Mario Canahuati on Monday hailed the
beginning of normalization of his country's
relations with other countries after last
year's coup.
"The ties are starting to normalize,"
although President Porfirio Lobo had been in
office for just 18 days, Canahuati told
local media.
"The advance we have had in these 18 days
has been very important, not only with
friendly countries at the international
level, but also with multilateral financing
organizations," Canahuati said.
"Britain, Morocco, Israel and Turkey have
requested our approval for sending their
ambassadors to our country," Canahuati said.
"The ties with Spain begin to be normalized,
as we have requested the consent to have a
Honduran ambassador in that country," he
said.
"Technically just the Central American
countries like Nicaragua are missing (from
the normalization). Also we have not
restored diplomatic ties with Brazil or with
the members of the Bolivarian Alliance for
the Americas either," he said.
But Brazil has sought Honduras' consent for
sending an officer in charge of business, in
a gesture that "shows its intention of
establishing a friendly relation with
Honduras as a first step," Canahuati said.
