Ignorance Behind Anti
Mining Measures In Costa Rica
BNamericas cited Mr Franz Ulloa president of
Costa Rican mining chamber as saying that
ignorance, political opportunism and the
lack of proper advisors in the mining sector
are the reasons why a number of government
representatives have publicly proclaimed an
anti-mining stance.
He said that "By making these comments
politicians have incited environmental
groups, which have organized themselves
around the cause and will not let the issue
go. This is because our leaders are ignorant
when it comes to mining realities and the
environmental impact of these activities."
Mr Ulloa said exacerbating the situation is
the fact that many people in Costa Rica are
not aware that mining is an industry and
even less aware that our national
performance depends on it every day.
He said that many people have the wrong idea
about mining because of the pressure from
environmentalists that use environmental
issues as a political platform.
Mr Ulloa said "The ignorance surrounding the
issues has made it very difficult, labor
intensive and expensive to form a defense
against anti-mining arguments.”
He said that it is very difficult to get
these ideas across to the public since
politicians and religious leaders have
started to oppose gold mining in order to
gain popularity.
In Costa Rica, Canadian company Infinito
Gold is waiting to start operations at its
Crucitas project as is B2Gold at the
Bellavista mine.
