Venezuela Confirms 47
Dead from Caracazo
CARACAS - At least 47 out of 125 cases of
exhumed remains in the sector La Peste of
Southern General Cemetery belong to victims
of the repression of the Caracazo,
Venezuelan authorities confirmed today.
We have established they were individuals
who perished at that time ( February, 27 and
28, 1989), stated in a press conference
Coroner Carmen Centeno.
According to the official, the study of the
other remains (78) continues, in order to
identify as many victims as possible from
the popular riot suppressed by the
neoliberal government of Carlos Andrés Pérez.
We know that 27 do not correspond to
Caracazo, because they died 30 or 40 years
ago, he said.
According to Centeno, each case is examined
in detail, through a complex process in
which a multidisciplinary team is involved.
The expert stressed the need for more data
from relatives of killed or disappeared
people during the incident.
In the last quarter of 2009, the Venezuelan
Attorney's Office with the support of
several entities promoted the process of
exhuming and identifying victims of Caracazo,
effort to get as close as possible to what
happened.
A 21years from the event, is still unknown
death toll due to the violence unleashed by
military and police against the massive
demand for social inclusion. Pereza's
government then, mentioned 300 dead, while
witnesses, investigators and human rights
organizations say up to thousands.
For this weekend activities are planned to
commemorate those people killed during the
social protest, here considered a symbol of
struggle for justice. |
