Argentina's Demand over the Malvinas
(Falklands)
CARACAS - The Venezuelan Foreign Policy
Committee of the National Assembly is
proposing on Thursday to the plenary to
support Argentina's government on its fight
to recover its sovereignty over the
(Malvinas) Falkland Islands, territory
under the United Kingdom's control.
We propose to issue a solidarity agreement
that would be presented to Argentina's
Parliament so that it learns about our
steadfast support to the decision of the
Cristina Fernandez Administration of
claiming the Falklands, said the President
of the Foreign Relations Committee Roy Daza.
The Socialist deputy recalled the recent
escalation of tensions between Buenos Aires
and London since British companies started
exploring and exploiting oil in the
archipelago of 4,633 square miles and
located in the South Atlantic Ocean.
Our action is not interventionist. It is a
matter of solidarity towards a British
colonialist attitude, said Daza.
Argentina and the United Kingdom entered a
bloody conflict almost 28 years ago that
caused more than 900 deaths with the aim of
occupying the Falklands, which London took
by force in 1833.
Buenos Aires turned to the United Nations on
Wednesday to ask for the intervention of
Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon in the dispute
over the territory the British call the
