Guatemala Demands US
Probe on Official Mail Violation
GUATEMALA - The Guatemalan government has
presented the US with a diplomatic note
expressing its concern for the events
occurred in Miami with several citizens, two
of them already deported.
The letter was addressed to the Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton with copy to her
Interior Security peer Janet Napolitano,
according to sources of the Foreign Ministry
It is referred to anomalies in Miami for
violation of official mail by the Federal
Express Mail company (Fed Ex) and demanded
an investigation into it and into
Immigration and Customs agents also.
A few days ago the Fed Ex company violated
and retained envelopes with seven Guatemalan
passports sent to the Guatemala's Consulate
in Miami since the employers thought they
were false and notified the migration
authorities about it.
Three Guatemalans were later subpoenaed by
the company to collect their documents but
they were arrested, two of them have already
been deported and a woman is in risk of been
deported too, the Siglo Veintiuno newspaper
reports.
According to Deputy Foreign Minister Miguel
Angel Ibarra the note sent to Washington
demandes the US to investigate violation of
Guatemala post.
In this respect US groups dedicated to
protect Guatemalan immigrants demanded
President Alvaro Colom a strenuous protest
for the case.
