Nicaragua Police Arrest Drug
Suspects
MANAGUA - Nicaraguan National Police
arrested three suspected drug traffickers
Tuesday, including a Mexican, and seized 14
guns during a raid on a highway in central
Nicaragua.
The police spokesman, Vilma Reyes, reported
that the detainees are Nicaraguans Manuel
Machado and Noel Gonzalez, and Mexican Jose
Antonio Hernandez Lopez.
According to the spokeswoman, Machado was
wanted for his alleged involvement in the
smuggling of 1.6 tons of cocaine in the area
of Altamira, south of Nicaragua.
For the part of Hernandez, who lived in
Honduras and had just entered Nicaragua on
Monday, is accused of having links with the
Mexican Cartel of Los Zetas, a famous drug
cartel.
Nicaraguan National Police also found 14
guns in their trunks, including 12 AK-47 and
M-16.
"Research shows that (Mexican Cartel of Los
Zetas) was stockpiling weapons in Nicaragua
and seized weapons would be used for an
assault against a gas station," said Vilma
Reyes.
