Brazil To Spend $645  Million Dollars On Disaster-Hit Regions

BRASILIA - Brazilian states and municipalities affected by natural disasters at the end of last year will receive a total of 1.2 billion reais ($645 million U.S. dollars) in federal aid for reconstruction.

Among the fund, which comes from the financial surplus, 1 billion reais will be allocated to the Ministry of National Integration to provide clothing and food for victims of disasters, rehabilitate buildings and remove debris, according to an interim measure published on Tuesday in Brazil's Official Journal.

The Ministry of Education will receive 200 million reais for the reconstruction and renovation of public schools.

According to Brazilian laws, the financial surplus can only be used for debt reduction, so the government had to work out the interim measure to make an exception and allow resources to be used in emergency aid and reconstruction work.
