Venezuela: Humanitarian Aid
to Guatemala
CARACAS - The Venezuelan government has sent
Guatemala 12 tons of food and other basic
necessities by ship, intended for the
victims of the Pacaya Volcano and Tropical
Storm Agatha.
The Tango-62 ship departed from Puerto
Cabello, sent off by Foreign Minister
Nicolas Maduro and the Guatemalan ambassador
in Caracas, Erick Roberto .
Maduro also talked about the shipment of
nearly 100 meters of materials for bridges.
These resources will help to deal with the
emergency resulting from the combination of
two natural phenomena, he said.
During the ceremony, the foreign minister
declared that in recent days, Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez had been in constant
contact with his Guatemalan counterpart,
Alvaro Colom.
In Maduroâ�Ös opinion, the donation is
another example of Venezuela's solidarity
with the countries of the region hit by
natural disasters. It also represents
another step in the interest of Latin
American unity, he said.
For his part, Ambassador Molina expressed
gratitude for the gesture. "We are grateful
for the support of Venezuela and President
Chavez. Guatemala now needs everything," he
said.
Dozens of people were killed and 24 bridges
were destroyed by recent natural disasters
in Guatemala.
