Failed Mediation
And The Honduras
Coup

Honduras, says
that Costa
Rica's former
president, Oscar
Arias, was well
aware that there
would be a coup
d'etat in
Honduras.
Miralda writes
"he knew
perfectly well
what was brewing
in Honduras".
The writer made
his remarks
during an
interview to
ElPais.cr during
a recent visit
to Costa Rica.
Miralda says
that Arias was
told to be ready
to mediate the
problem, that it
(the mediation)
would not come
from the
Hondurans, but
must come from
Arias himself
and would be
backed by the
Hondurans.
The writer
claims that
Costa Rica was
as much part of
the coup d'etat,
as all
agreements
called for the
reinstatement of
Zelaya which
never occurred.
"It would have
been best for
Costa Rica not
have gotten
involved. They
(Arias
administration)
knew perfectly
well. Costa
Ricans will,
sooner or later,
learn of the
participation
when all the
memoirs come to
public light",
said Miralda.
Although the
Arias acceptance
to mediate was
to avoid a
bloodshed in
Honduras,
Miralda claims
that the
mediation was
not positive for
the people of
Honduras, nor
for the
interests of
Central America.
"It would have
been best if he
(Arias) would
stayed out of it
enjoying his
Nobel prize and
not muddy his
name with a
totally
unfortunate
mediation that
was out of
context", were
the final words
of Jorge Miralda.
