Guatemala: Frustrated, Chief
of Corruption Panel Resigns
Carlos Castresaña, the Spanish judge leading
a United Nations commission charged with
fighting Guatemala’s corruption and
impunity, has given up in frustration.
After two and a half years at the head of
the commission, known as Cicig, Mr.
Castresaña resigned saying that
Guatemala had failed to keep promises to
follow the panel’s recommendations.
The catalyst for his resignation was the
appointment of Guatemala’s new attorney
general, Conrado Reyes. Mr. Castresaña
accused Mr. Reyes of having ties to illegal
adoption rings and drug traffickers.
