Laura Announces More Ministerial Appointments

President-elect Laura Chinchilla named six ministers to her new government that begins on May 8.

- Ministro de Hacienda (Revenue ministry): Fernando Herrero, who is the current regulador general. Herrero was ministro de Hacienda in the José María Figueres administration of 1994 to 1996.

- Ministra de Economia (MEIC): Mayi Antillón who is currenlty the ministra de Información.

- Ministra de Comercio Exterior: Anabel González, who is the former negotiator of the Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) - free trade agreement with the United States. González held the post of vice-ministra de Comercio Exterior during the Abel Pacheco administration (2002 - 2006).

- Ministra de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG): Gloria Abrahams, who is currently assistant to MAG minister, Javier Flores.

- Ministro de Turismo: Carlos Ricardo Benavides, who is back at the post after resigning the post to form part of the Chinchilla strategy team.

- Ministro de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT): Francisco Jiménez, current president of the Japdeva. Jiménez was vice-minister of the MOPT and director of the Consejo de Seguridad Vial (Cosevi) during the José María Figueres administration.

Chinchilla is setting the tone of her ministerial appointments, keeping to her commitment to make up of her cabinet to be at least 50% women.

With respect of Tuesday's announcement, Chinchilla said "never in history has there been three women in charge of 80% of the national production."

With Tuesday's announcement it brings the total ministerial appointments to eight.

Last week doña Laura named José María Tijerino as her ministro de Seguridad Pública and Marco Vargas as ministro de la Presidencia.
