Porteadores Suspend Protests
For Today, "Clásico" Is On
Following a meeting at Casa Presidencial
Tuesday, the porteadores have suspended the
planned protests for today, giving the
government a week more to resolve the
controversial problem of the porteo.
The announcement also means that tonights "clásico"-
the big game between rivals Deportivo
Saprissa and Liga Alajuelense - is on.
Before the announcement by porteadores, the
ministerios de Seguridad and Salud has said
they would call off the game due to lack of
enough police officers at the stadium, as
the priority of the police was to cover the
protest and not the soccer game.
The ministra de Salud, María Luisa Ávila,
said on Tuesday that the presence of the
Fuerza Pública is always necessary.
The Clásico always stirs up passions between
fans of the two rival teams, which has
resulted in vandalism and riots in past.
The porteadores have been pressuring the
government to eliminate the word "persons"
from the Codigo de Comercio (Commercial
Code) that would completely eliminate the "porteo"
or the carrying of persons in an informal
taxi.
On the other side of the argument, the
formal taxi drivers say they will take to
the streets in protest if the porteadores
are allowed to continue to operate. |
