Chile Quake Aftershock Hits
Coastal Area
SANTIAGO - A new aftershock of 6.7 degrees
in the Richter scale shook the already
damaged Chilean coastal area, 45 miles
northwest from Concepcion.
The aftershock of the devastating 8-degree
earthquake in the Richter scale on February
27 took place 21 miles deep into the Pacific
Ocean at 23:21 hours, Chilean time.
However, the National Emergency Office
reported that the Navy Water Service (SHOA)
ruled out that there was a tsunami alert in
the area, because "the characteristics of
this quake are not those that can unleash a
tsunami in the Chilean coastal area."
This aftershock is one of the most powerful
of 300 registered in the last two weeks,
together with that of 6.9 degrees on March
11, when President Sebastian Piñera was
inaugurated. |
