Colombian President Ready To Accept Humanitarian Agreement With Rebels

BOGOTA - Colombian President Alvaro Uribe said Sunday he is ready to accept a humanitarian agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) as long as its members no longer commit crimes.

Uribe said his government has eased the release of jailed FARC members in exchange for the police and soldiers held captive by the largest rebel group in the country.

He said his government "is not against a humanitarian agreement so long as it is not to release criminals to the FARC."

The humanitarian agreement must set a condition for jailed FARC members not to commit crimes again after they are set free, he added.

Uribe also said he wants a peace agreement with the FARC.

"But the peace agreement has to start on a goodwill," he said, adding that one cannot think of a peace agreement "as long as the criminal activities do not stop."

On Sunday, the leftist rebels released Private Josue Calvo in their first release in more than a year. Calvo was captured by the FARC last April.

Calvo is the first of the two soldiers the leftist rebels have said they are freeing this week in what they call is their last goodwill unilateral release.
