Panama: Mining Projects Concern Ecologists

PANAMA - The possible modification of the regulations for the mining activity in Panama is generating concerns on Tuesday among the environmentalist groups, who are aware of the adverse impact this action may have on the communities and the environment.

President of the Republic Ricardo himself recognized the option of changing the existing code on the matter to facilitate the access to foreign investors that are interested in some projects. Estimates of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry say that the State would receive nearly $94 million annually for the mining exploitation.

In that same period of time, the profits of the companies would reach $1, 368 million.

Entities as the Environmental Advocacy Center (CIAM), the Blue Almanac and the Alliance for the Future of the Atlantic warned about the damages this kind of economic activity causes to communities since it pollutes the soil.
