MOPT Expected To
Demand
Taxis To Provide
Child Seats And
Boosters
Although the
issue still be
analyzed, all
probabilities
are that taxis
will have to
carry booster
and child seats
to avoid being
fined. The
ministro de
Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT),
Francisco
Jiménez, said
the most
reasonable
solution is for
taxis to carry
one booster and
one child seat.
"We must be
reasonable, a
seat and a
booster is more
than good",
Jiménez said on
Friday.
The problem is
what happens
when a family
with more than
one child wants
to take a taxi.
Jiménez said
that the MOPT is
working on
figuring out
what percentage
of customers
fall into that
situation.
"It makes no
sense to force
taxis to spend
money if when it
means only 1% of
the population",
Jiménez added.
The
Constitutional
Court ruled that
taxis must
provide a child
seat, as
required by the
Ley de Tránsito,
for its
customers.
The decision was
made following
an appeal by a
woman who says
that she was
refused service
by four taxis,
missing her
medical
appointment,
because she had
her two
children, aged 6
and 3, in tow.
The situation
caused the
father of the
children to feel
rights were
violated and
turned to the
Constitutional
Court for
action.
Although the
court did not
rule in favour
of the woman in
her claim
against the
taxis, the court
did say that
taxis cannot
refuse to
provide service
because they do
not have the
proper
restraints in
their vehicles
and ordered the
MOPT to enforce
the provisions.
Up to the court
ruling, taxis,
like buses, were
exempt from
having to strap
in children 12
years of age and
under.
