Dengue Epidemic
Hitting Panama
Recent rainfalls
have pushed up
the number of
reported cases
of dengue in
Chiriqui. So far
this year the
number of cases
of Dengue has
more than
tripled. There
have been 77
cases brought by
the Aedes
aegypti mosquito.
A regional
Ministry of
Health in Panama
report projects
that the number
of in the
Chiriqui
province, will
grow especially
as the epidemic
that affects
Costa Rica
increases the
risk in the
border
provinces, such
as Bocas del
Toro and
Chiriquí.
The Ministry of
Health in Costa
Rica reported
that until the
May 14, there
were 5.900 cases
of classic
dengue, of which
at least 400
belonged to
communities
bordering
Panama.
It was hoped
that this year
the Chiriquí
cases of classic
dengue would
fall but, until
mid May there
were, 77 were
confirmed,
against 24 in
the same period
last year.
