41 Earthquakes
In Costa Rica So
Far This Year
Everyone felt
the 6.1
earthquake that
hit Costa Rica
on Thursday at
4:16pm, with the
epicentre
located 20
kilometres
southwest of
Quepos.
According to the
Observatorio
Vulcanológico y
Sismológico de
Costa Rica (OVSICORI),
Thursday's quake
is by far the
strongest of the
41 tremors that
have shaken
Costa Rica this
year.
The majority of
the 41 tremors
were under 4 on
the Richter
Scale and not
felt by many,
while a total of
7 did reach
between 5 and
5.5 and with
depths of
between 11 and
45 kilometres.
The OVISCORI
reports that
seismic activity
is down over the
same period last
year, when in
January 2009, an
earthquake
destroyed the
area of
Cinchona,
northeast of the
Poás volcano,
which led to
continued
aftershocks for
months.
