Presidenta Chinchilla Will Not Accept Higher Taxes To Pay For Legislator's Pay Hike

President Laura Chinchilla, just back from her trip to Spain, said she will not accept high taxes to pay for the proposed legislator's salary hike. The comment was made following a cabinet session held at the INCAE in Alajuela.

The presidenta is adamant that she opposes legislators hiking their salaries and will not support higher taxes as way of financing the salaries that are proposed to increase from ¢1.5 million to ¢4 million monthly.

Doña Laura said she will support the pay hike if and only when she is explained from where they will get the money to pay for the hike and by taxation is not the way.

Chinchilla said she recognizes that the executive branch (the government) cannot interfere in the legislative process, but respects the popular feeling of rejection against the increase.
