Venezuela Reducing Dependency
on Hydroelectric Plants
CARACAS - Venezuela got over the 5,000
Megawatts in its thermo electric energy
generation this week as part of a
diversification program to stop depending on
hydroelectric plants.
A strong drought attributed to El Niño
southern oscillation phenomenon was about to
provoke a collapse in the Venezuelan
electric system, and forced the country to
take emergency actions, such as rationing
energy, and an aggressive plan for
installation of new capacities.
The diversification program is aimed at
reducing the country's dependency on
hydroelectric power generation by more than
70 percent.
President Hugo Chavez, who is constantly
updated on the situation of electric energy
for the population, said that the barrier of
the 5,000 MW had been surpassed last
Thursday.
The perspective is to make a balance between
the hydroelectric and the thermoelectric
generation, so plants will be built,
including those using oil from the Orinoco
Strip in Venezuela. The investments, added
to the start of the rainy season, allowed
the authorities to eliminate electric power
limitation on the weekends and holidays, in
some regions of the country.
Later, the rationing of energy will be
suspended, as long as reservoirs are
completely restored. |
